All depends on how it 'affects' you. Did it cause you getting fired? Do harm to your character? Did you lose monetary pay?

Depends on what they are saying and why they are saying it. If they falsely accuse you of a crime in order to extort money from you, this is a crime. If they say you paint yourself green and dance on the table all night, there is no crime except in certain counties in Alabama.

I don't know if it is a criminal matter but slander is a valid civil claim...if you can prove it and prove what they said to be false and prove that you suffered damages.
