That statement is a new right statement.





Marxists would say it's false because the poor (the ';proletariat';) are poor because the rich (the ';bourgeoisie';) are exploiting them.





You could talk about:


a) reserve army of labour - this is where their is always cheap labour available as the proletariat don't want to be in poverty and so will cheaply - they are exploited by the bourgeoisie as they recieve very low wages and there are many proletariat who will accept this work


b) convincing the proletariat into the bourgeoisie ideology - use SUN 1997 ';the sun backs blair'; and blair wins


c) HOWEVER media regulation in the UK so harder to do





Then go for feminism:


They would say that the poor (females) and poor because they are being exploited by the rich (men)





Due to the patriarchal system that we live in, women are likely to be lower paid as they are in part time jobs more often (as they are expected to do child care) and also miss out on benefits due to this. Women earn on average 拢7 less an hour then men.





At the end of your talk about feminism, criticise it with something like ';however, this may be flawed as it ignores the way that the state benefits females such as child care and ignores females own choices to take care of children etc)Why is the statement, ';The poor are poor because they are too lazy to work';, false?
Many are born into poverty, and never obtain higher education and remain suck in the culture of poverty. Or due to social circumstances never rise above where they are.


As well many woman live in poverty, due to the fact that even with a college education they still make less than men. Just some thoughts.
I don't think it's true for all, but it's definitely true for the majority. See the 'Big Easy'. Second and third generation welfare. Whats wrong with that picture. Just one example.
